The Fourteenth Sunday after Pentecost

August 29, 2010

About This Morning’s Scripture Readings:

(We Are Humbled and Exalted by the Cross of Christ)

Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled,” Jesus proclaims, but “he who humbles himself will be exalted” (Luke 14:11).  For your hope is in the name of the Lord, who humbled Himself unto death on the cross and was exalted in His resurrection.  So are you humbled by His cross, and “at the resurrection of the righteous,” He will say to you, “Friend, move up to a better place” (Luke 14:10; 13–14).  By His grace, the King will honor you “in the place of great men,” where your eyes will gaze upon the Prince, His dearly-beloved Son (Prov. 25:7).  Therefore, humble yourself and exalt your neighbor.

Welcome!

We extend a warm welcome to all who worship here today!  Whether you are a member or a visitor, we pray your time with us this morning is a blessing.

  THE PREPARATION

The Opening Hymn: LSB #605 - “Father Welcomes”

The congregation is invited to please stand as able.

The Invocation

P:   In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.      (Matthew 28:19-20)

C:  Amen.

The Confession of Sins

P:   Beloved in the Lord!  Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God, our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.     (Adapted from Hebrews 10:22)

P:   Our help is in the name of the Lord.

C:  Who made heaven and earth.                 (Psalm 124:8)

P:   I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord.

C:  And You forgave the iniquity of my sin.              (Psalm 32:5b)

P:   O almighty God, merciful Father, ...

A:  I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment.  But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor sinful being.

P:   Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.  (John 20:19-23)

C:  Amen.

  THE SERVICE OF THE WORD

The Introit: Psalm 34:11; 25:1, 4-9 (NIV)

P:   Come, O children, listen to me; I will teach you the fear of the LORD.

C:  O my people, hear my teaching; listen to the words of my mouth.

P:   I will open my mouth in parables, I will utter hidden things, things from of old; what we have heard and known, what our fathers have told us.

C:  We will not hide them from their children; we will tell the next generation the praiseworthy deeds of the LORD, His power, and the wonders He has done.

P:   He decreed statutes for Jacob and established the law in Israel, which He commanded our forefathers to teach their children, so the next generation would know them, even the children yet to be born, and they in turn would tell their children.

C:  Then they would put their trust in God and would not forget His deeds but would keep His commands.

A:  Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Spirit; as it was in the beginning, is now, and will be forever.  Amen.

The Kyrie:

P:   In peace let us pray to the Lord.

C:  Lord, have mercy.

P:   For the peace from above and for our salvation let us pray to the Lord.

C:  Lord, have mercy.

P:   For the peace of the whole world, for the well-being of the Church of God, and for the unity of all let us pray to the Lord.

C:  Lord, have mercy.

For this holy house and for all who offer here their worship and praise let us pray to the Lord.

      Lord, have mercy.

P:   Help, save, comfort, and defend us, gracious Lord.

C:  Amen.

Hymn of Praise: “This is the Feast” (see back page of bulletin)

The Salutation and Collect for the Day

P:   The Lord be with you.                     (Adapted from 2 Timothy 4:22)

C:  And with your spirit.

P:   Let us pray …

O Lord of grace and mercy, teach us by Your Holy Spirit to follow the example of Your Son in true humility, that we may withstand the temptations of the devil and with pure hearts and minds avoid ungodly pride; through the same Jesus Christ, our Lord, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C:  Amen.

The congregation may be seated.

Catechism Reading

P:   As the head of the family should teach it in a simple way to his household: What is the benefit of this eating and drinking?

C:  These words, “Given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins,” show us that in the Sacrament forgiveness of sins, life, and salvation are given us through these words.  For where there is forgiveness of sins, there is also life and salvation.

P:   How can bodily eating and drinking do such great things?

C:  Certainly not just eating and drinking do these things, but the words written here: “Given and shed for you for the forgiveness of sins.”  These words, along with the bodily eating and drinking, are the main thing in the Sacrament. Whoever believes these words has exactly what they say: “forgiveness of sins.”

Old Testament Reading: Proverbs 25:2-10 (NIV)

It is the glory of God to conceal a matter; to search out a matter is the glory of kings.  As the heavens are high and the earth is deep, so the hearts of kings are unsearchable.  Remove the dross from the silver, and out comes material for the silversmith; remove the wicked from the king's presence, and his throne will be established through righteousness.  Do not exalt yourself in the king’s presence, and do not claim a place among great men; it is better for him to say to you, “Come up here,” than for him to humiliate you before a nobleman. What you have seen with your eyes do not bring hastily to court, for what will you do in the end if your neighbor puts you to shame? If you argue your case with a neighbor, do not betray another man’s confidence, or he who hears it may shame you and you will never lose your bad reputation.

P:   This is the Word of the Lord.

C:  Thanks be to God.

Epistle Reading: 2 Timothy 1:1-14 (NIV)

Paul, an apostle of Christ Jesus by the will of God, according to the promise of life that is in Christ Jesus,

To Timothy, my dear son:

Grace, mercy and peace from God the Father and Christ Jesus our Lord.

I thank God, whom I serve, as my forefathers did, with a clear conscience, as night and day I constantly remember you in my prayers.  Recalling your tears, I long to see you, so that I may be filled with joy.  I have been reminded of your sincere faith, which first lived in your grandmother Lois and in your mother Eunice and, I am persuaded, now lives in you also.  For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands.  For God did not give us a spirit of timidity, but a spirit of power, love, and self-discipline.

So do not be ashamed to testify about our Lord, or ashamed of me his prisoner.  But join with me in suffering for the gospel, by the power of God, who has saved us and called us to a holy life—not because of anything we have done but because of his own purpose and grace.  This grace was given us in Christ Jesus before the beginning of time, but it has now been revealed through the appearing of our Savior, Christ Jesus, who has destroyed death and has brought life and immortality to light through the gospel.  And of this gospel I was appointed a herald and an apostle and a teacher.  That is why I am suffering as I am. Yet I am not ashamed, because I know whom I have believed, and am convinced that he is able to guard what I have entrusted to him for that day.

What you heard from me, keep as the pattern of sound teaching, with faith and love in Christ Jesus.  Guard the good deposit that was entrusted to you—guard it with the help of the Holy Spirit who lives in us.

P:   This is the Word of the Lord.

C:  Thanks be to God.

The congregation is invited to please stand as able.

The Alleluia Verse: Luke 14:11 (NIV)

P:   Alleluia.  Everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.  Alleluia.

C:  (Sung) Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!

The Holy Gospel: Luke 14:1-14 (NIV)

P:   The Holy Gospel is written in the fourteenth chapter of St. Luke, beginning with the fourteenth verse.

C:  (Sung) Glory be to Thee, O Lord!

One Sabbath, when Jesus went to eat in the house of a prominent Pharisee, he was being carefully watched.  There in front of him was a man suffering from dropsy.  Jesus asked the Pharisees and experts in the law, “Is it lawful to heal on the Sabbath or not?”  But they remained silent.  So taking hold of the man, he healed him and sent him away.

Then he asked them, “If one of you has a son or an ox that falls into a well on the Sabbath day, will you not immediately pull him out?”  And they had nothing to say.

When he noticed how the guests picked the places of honor at the table, he told them this parable: “When someone invites you to a wedding feast, do not take the place of honor, for a person more distinguished than you may have been invited.  If so, the host who invited both of you will come and say to you, ‘Give this man your seat.’  Then, humiliated, you will have to take the least important place.  But when you are invited, take the lowest place, so that when your host comes, he will say to you, ‘Friend, move up to a better place.’  Then you will be honored in the presence of all your fellow guests.  For everyone who exalts himself will be humbled, and he who humbles himself will be exalted.”

Then Jesus said to his host, “When you give a luncheon or dinner, do not invite your friends, your brothers or relatives, or your rich neighbors; if you do, they may invite you back and so you will be repaid.  But when you give a banquet, invite the poor, the crippled, the lame, the blind, and you will be blessed.  Although they cannot repay you, you will be repaid at the resurrection of the righteous.”

P:   Here ends the Gospel.

C:  (Sung) Praise be to Thee, O Christ!

The Nicene Creed

C:    I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.  He suffered and was buried.  And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father.  And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets.  And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.  Amen.

The congregation may be seated.

THE SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION

To Our Guests

We welcome you to this worship service!  It is a sad consequence of the division in Christianity that we cannot extend to all a general invitation to receive the Lord’s Supper.  Lutherans believe, because the Bible declares, that in the Lord’s Supper we are given the very Body and Blood of the Lord Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins and that we are bound together as the body of Christ in the confession of the one faith this congregation confesses at the Lord’s Table.  Reception of Holy Communion at this time by Christians who are not one in faith with us would imply a oneness which does not exist and for which we must all pray.

Therefore, because the Bible declares it is important for all to know what the Lord gives us in His Supper and that we be one in faith at the table of our Lord, we kindly ask guests who are not members of another Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod (LCMS) congregation to please abstain from receiving Holy Communion this morning.  Instead, during Holy Communion, you are invited to join the congregation in meditating on God’s Word and singing the hymns.

If you wish, Pastor Slater will be pleased to speak with you about our LCMS communion practice and about preparing for a future, informed participation in the blessings and fellowship of the Sacrament with us.

Again, we welcome you and look forward to seeing you again!

The Lutheran Hour also airs on XM Radio 170 every Sunday at noon or anytime on the web at www.lutheranhour.org.

Life Quote. “So great is my veneration for the Bible, and so strong my belief, that when duly read and meditated on, it is of all books in the world, that which contributes most to make men good, wise, and happy—that the earlier my children begin to read it … the more lively and confident will be my hopes that they will prove useful citizens of their country.”  John Quincy Adams, former president of the United States.  This Life Quote is from Lutherans For Life-www.lutheransforlife.org/1-888-364-LIFE.
