The Fifteenth Sunday after Pentecost

September 5, 2010

About This Morning’s Scripture Readings:

(Christ Jesus Has Paid the Cost of Discipleship for You)

A disciple of Jesus Christ will “carry his cross” (Luke 14:27) and follow the Lord through death into life.  Discipleship is costly because it crucifies the old man with “everything he has” (Luke 14:33), in order to raise up the new man in Christ.  The disciple disavows “his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life” (Luke 14:26), in deference to Christ.

That way of the cross is impossible, except that Christ Jesus has already paid the cost.  His cross is set before you as “life and prosperity, death and destruction” (Deut. 30:15). Taking up His cross is to “choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the LORD your God, listen to His voice, and hold fast to Him” (Deut. 30:19–20).  To live that life in Christ is also to bear His cross in love, “so that any favor you do will be spontaneous and not forced” (Philemon 14).

  THE PREPARATION

The Opening Hymn: LSB #809 - “Great Is Thy Faithfulness”

The congregation is invited to please stand as able.

The Invocation

P:   In the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit.    (Matthew 28:19-20)

C:  Amen.

The Confession of Sins

P:   Beloved in the Lord!  Let us draw near with a true heart and confess our sins unto God, our Father, beseeching Him in the name of our Lord Jesus Christ to grant us forgiveness.      (Adapted from Hebrews 10:22)

P:   Our help is in the name of the Lord.

C:  Who made heaven and earth.                 (Psalm 124:8)

P:   I said, I will confess my transgressions unto the Lord.

C:  And You forgave the iniquity of my sin.              (Psalm 32:5b)

P:   O almighty God, merciful Father, ...

A:  I, a poor, miserable sinner, confess unto You all my sins and iniquities with which I have ever offended You and justly deserved Your temporal and eternal punishment.  But I am heartily sorry for them and sincerely repent of them, and I pray You of Your boundless mercy and for the sake of the holy, innocent, bitter sufferings and death of Your beloved Son, Jesus Christ, to be gracious and merciful to me, a poor sinful being.

P:   Upon this your confession, I, by virtue of my office, as a called and ordained servant of the Word, announce the grace of God unto all of you, and in the stead and by the command of my Lord Jesus Christ I forgive you all your sins in the name of the Father and of the + Son and of the Holy Spirit.  (John 20:19-23)

C:  Amen.

  THE SERVICE OF THE WORD

The Introit: Psalm 119:27-32 (NIV)

P:   O LORD, let me understand the teaching of Your precepts; then I will meditate on Your wonders.

C:  My soul is weary with sorrow; strengthen me according to Your word.

P:   Keep me from deceitful ways; be gracious to me through Your law.

C:  I have chosen the way of truth; I have set my heart on Your laws.

P:   I hold fast to Your statutes, O LORD; do not let me be put to shame.

C:  I run in the path of Your commands, for You have set my heart free.

Gloria Patri

A:  (Sung) Glory be to the Father and to the Son and to the Holy Ghost; As it was in the beginning, is now, and ever shall be, world without end.  Amen.

The Kyrie

A:  (Sung) Lord, have mercy upon us.  Christ, have mercy upon us. Lord, have mercy upon us.    (Adapt. from Mark 10:47)

The Gloria in Excelsis

C:  (Sung) Glory be to God on high: And on earth peace, good will toward men.  We praise Thee, we bless Thee, we worship Thee, we glorify Thee, we give thanks to Thee, for Thy great glory.  O Lord God, heav’nly King, God the Father Almighty.  O Lord, the only-begotten Son, Jesus Christ; O Lord God, Lamb of God, Son of the Father, That takest away the sin of the world, have mercy upon us.  Thou that takest away the sin of the world, receive our prayer.  Thou that sittest at the right hand of God the Father, have mercy upon us.  For Thou only art holy; Thou only art the Lord.  Thou only, O Christ, with the Holy Ghost, art most high in the glory of God the Father.  Amen.       (Adapted from Luke 2:14; John 1:29)

The Salutation and Collect for the Day

P:   The Lord be with you.                     (Adapted from 2 Timothy 4:22)

C:  (Sung) And with thy spirit.

P:   Let us pray …

O merciful Lord, You did not spare Your only Son but delivered Him up for us all. Grant us courage and strength to take up the cross and follow Him, who lives and reigns with You and the Holy Spirit, one God, now and forever.

C:  (Sung) Amen.

The congregation may be seated.

Catechism Reading

P:   As the head of the family should teach it in a simple way to his household:  Who receives this sacrament worthily?

C:  Fasting and bodily preparation are certainly fine outward training. But that person is truly worthy and well prepared who has faith in these words: “Given and shed for you for the remission of sins.”  But anyone who does not believe these words or doubts them is unworthy and unprepared, for the words “for you” require all hearts to believe.

Old Testament Reading: Deuteronomy 30:15-20 (NIV)

See, I set before you today life and prosperity, death and destruction.  For I command you today to love the LORD your God, to walk in his ways, and to keep his commands, decrees and laws; then you will live and increase, and the LORD your God will bless you in the land you are entering to possess.

But if your heart turns away and you are not obedient, and if you are drawn away to bow down to other gods and worship them, I declare to you this day that you will certainly be destroyed.  You will not live long in the land you are crossing the Jordan to enter and possess.

This day I call heaven and earth as witnesses against you that I have set before you life and death, blessings and curses.  Now choose life, so that you and your children may live and that you may love the LORD your God, listen to his voice, and hold fast to him.  For the LORD is your life, and he will give you many years in the land he swore to give to your fathers, Abraham, Isaac and Jacob.

P:   This is the Word of the Lord.

C:  Thanks be to God.

Epistle Reading: Philemon (NIV)

Paul, a prisoner of Christ Jesus, and Timothy our brother,

To Philemon our dear friend and fellow worker, to Apphia our sister, to Archippus our fellow soldier and to the church that meets in your home:

Grace to you and peace from God our Father and the Lord Jesus Christ.

I always thank my God as I remember you in my prayers, for I hear about your faith in the Lord Jesus and your love for all the saints.  I pray that you may be active in sharing your faith, so that you will have a full understanding of every good thing we have in Christ.  Your love has given me great joy and encouragement, because you, brother, have refreshed the hearts of the saints.

Therefore, although in Christ I could be bold and order you to do what you ought to do, yet I appeal to you on the basis of love. I then, as Paul—an old man and now also a prisoner of Christ Jesus—I appeal to you for my son Onesimus, who became my son while I was in chains.  Formerly he was useless to you, but now he has become useful both to you and to me.

I am sending himwho is my very heartback to you.  I would have liked to keep him with me so that he could take your place in helping me while I am in chains for the gospel.  But I did not want to do anything without your consent, so that any favor you do will be spontaneous and not forced.  Perhaps the reason he was separated from you for a little while was that you might have him back for good—no longer as a slave, but better than a slave, as a dear brother.  He is very dear to me but even dearer to you, both as a man and as a brother in the Lord.

So if you consider me a partner, welcome him as you would welcome me. If he has done you any wrong or owes you anything, charge it to me.  I, Paul, am writing this with my own hand.  I will pay it back—not to mention that you owe me your very self.  I do wish, brother, that I may have some benefit from you in the Lord; refresh my heart in Christ.  Confident of your obedience, I write to you, knowing that you will do even more than I ask.

And one thing more: Prepare a guest room for me, because I hope to be restored to you in answer to your prayers.

Epaphras, my fellow prisoner in Christ Jesus, sends you greetings.  And so do Mark, Aristarchus, Demas and Luke, my fellow workers.

The grace of the Lord Jesus Christ be with your spirit.

P:   This is the Word of the Lord.

C:  Thanks be to God.

The congregation is invited to please stand as able.

The Alleluia Verse: Galatians 6:14 (NIV)

P:   Alleluia.  May I never boast except in the cross of our Lord Jesus Christ, through which the world has been crucified to me, and I to the world.  Alleluia.

C:  (Sung) Alleluia, Alleluia, Alleluia!

The Holy Gospel: Luke 14:25-35 (NIV)

P:   The Holy Gospel is written in the fourteenth chapter of St. Luke, beginning with the twenty-fifth verse.

C:  (Sung) Glory be to Thee, O Lord!

Large crowds were traveling with Jesus, and turning to them he said: “If anyone comes to me and does not hate his father and mother, his wife and children, his brothers and sisters—yes, even his own life—he cannot be my disciple.  And anyone who does not carry his cross and follow me cannot be my disciple.

“Suppose one of you wants to build a tower.  Will he not first sit down and estimate the cost to see if he has enough money to complete it?  For if he lays the foundation and is not able to finish it, everyone who sees it will ridicule him, saying, ‘This fellow began to build and was not able to finish.’

“Or suppose a king is about to go to war against another king.  Will he not first sit down and consider whether he is able with ten thousand men to oppose the one coming against him with twenty thousand?  If he is not able, he will send a delegation while the other is still a long way off and will ask for terms of peace.  In the same way, any of you who does not give up everything he has cannot be my disciple.

“Salt is good, but if it loses its saltiness, how can it be made salty again?  It is fit neither for the soil nor for the manure pile; it is thrown out.

“He who has ears to hear, let him hear.”

P:   Here ends the Gospel.

C:  (Sung) Praise be to Thee, O Christ!

The Nicene Creed

C:    I believe in one God, the Father Almighty, maker of heaven and earth and of all things visible and invisible.

And in one Lord Jesus Christ, the only-begotten Son of God, begotten of His Father before all worlds, God of God, Light of Light, very God of very God, begotten, not made, being of one substance with the Father, by whom all things were made; who for us men and for our salvation came down from heaven and was incarnate by the Holy Spirit of the virgin Mary and was made man; and was crucified also for us under Pontius Pilate.  He suffered and was buried.  And the third day He rose again according to the Scriptures and ascended into heaven and sits at the right hand of the Father.  And He will come again with glory to judge both the living and the dead, whose kingdom will have no end.

And I believe in the Holy Spirit, the Lord and giver of life, who proceeds from the Father and the Son, who with the Father and the Son together is worshiped and glorified, who spoke by the prophets.  And I believe in one holy Christian and apostolic Church, I acknowledge one Baptism for the remission of sins, and I look for the resurrection of the dead and the life of the world to come.  Amen.

The congregation may be seated.

The Offertory: LSB pp. 192-193

C:  (Sung) Create in me a clean heart, O God, and renew a right spirit within me.  Cast me not away from Thy presence, and take not Thy Holy Spirit from me.  Restore unto me the joy of Thy salvation; and uphold me with Thy free spirit.  Amen.                        (Psalm 51:10-12)

THE SERVICE OF HOLY COMMUNION

To Our Guests

We welcome you to this worship service!  It is a sad consequence of the division in Christianity that we cannot extend to all a general invitation to receive the Lord’s Supper.  Lutherans believe, because the Bible declares, that in the Lord’s Supper we are given the very Body and Blood of the Lord Jesus Christ for the forgiveness of sins and that we are bound together as the body of Christ in the confession of the one faith this congregation confesses at the Lord’s Table.  Reception of Holy Communion at this time by Christians who are not one in faith with us would imply a oneness which does not exist and for which we must all pray.

Therefore, because the Bible declares it is important for all to know what the Lord gives us in His Supper and that we be one in faith at the table of our Lord, we kindly ask guests who are not members of another Lutheran Church - Missouri Synod (LCMS) congregation to please abstain from receiving Holy Communion this morning.  Instead, during Holy Communion, you are invited to join the congregation in meditating on God’s Word and singing the hymns.

If you wish, Pastor Slater will be pleased to speak with you about our LCMS communion practice and about preparing for a future, informed participation in the blessings and fellowship of the Sacrament with us.

Again, we welcome you and look forward to seeing you again!

Stewardship Thought

Since Philemon was indebted to Paul, he could have ordered him to do the right thing and treat his runaway slave like a brother, but Paul wanted Philemon to do the right thing from his own free will.  Likewise, we are indebted to God for all the blessings He has showered upon us; God could demand that we give freely of our time, abilities and financial resources, but He loves cheerful givers!

Schroeder, president of Lutherans For Life.  This Life Quote is from Lutherans For Life-www.lutheransforlife.org/1-888-364-LIFE.

“If we answer the call to discipleship, where will it lead us? What decisions and partings will it demand?  To answer this question we shall have to go to Him, for only He knows the answer.  Only Jesus Christ, who bids us follow Him, knows the journey’s end.  But we do know that it will be a road of boundless mercy.”

                             - Dietrich Bonhoeffer, from The Cost of Discipleship
